Lourdes College of Nursing, Ernakulam located at Chembumukku along Kakkanad route began its journey of developing nursing academic excellence in 2002. The Educational Programmes include B.Sc. Nursing (2002), Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing (2005), MSc Nursing in 5 specialities (2011) (Med. Surg. - 3 seats, Paediatrics - 3 seats, OBG - 3 seats, Community Health - 3 seats & Mental Health (Psychiatric) - 5 seats. Also we have GNM programme with 50 seats. Lourdes Hospital is a NABH accredited multi-speciality hospital with 720 beds strength, including 10 intensive care units and 12 Operation theatres, super speciality facilities and 6 community out-reach programmes serving the coastal population.

Our college has been declared as 'Minority Institution' by the National commission for Minority Educational Institution.
Presently 199 B.Sc. nursing students, 52 Post basic B.Sc. and 140 GNM students are studying in this Institution. Besides 16 students are doing their post-graduation in Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing, Child health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing specialty.

History

Lourdes Society for Health Care & Research, constituted by the Archdiocese of Verapoly, reaches out to the community for professional healthcare services and education through its prestigious institutions such as Lourdes Hospital, Kochi (1965), Kristu Jayanti Hospital, Vypin (2000), Lourdes School of Nursing (1969), Lourdes College of Nursing (2002), Lourdes College of Paramedical and Sciences (2004), Lourdes Heart Institute & Neuro Centre (2007). His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarackal, Archbishop of Verapoly is the President of the Society.

Lourdes College of Nursing and Lourdes School of Nursing are two premier projects of the Society in the field of training in nursing and attract students from the length and breadth of the state of Kerala. Lourdes College of Nursing has been affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and at present to the Kerala University of Health Sciences and these Institutions are recognized by the Indian Nursing Council and Kerala Nursing council.

In the year 1969 on 16th July the Lourdes school of nursing was born from the untiring efforts of the late Msgr. Francis Fernandez, the first Director of our Hospital and of the first Principal Sr. Lucilla Clerici, of the Congregation of Sisters of Charity. The primary objectives of the Diploma Programme is to prepare well equipped professional nursing personnel who will be able to provide comprehensive health service to all in the hospital as well as in the community. During the entire Saga of 42yrs, we commenced our adventure with 12 students in the year 1969 with an amazing growth of 50 students per batch from the year 1997. Throughout the period of 1971 to 1980 the annual intake of students was 15, which increased into 24 per year in 1981 and unturned upto 24 per year. It has become 30 in 1992 and 32 in 1993.The number of students reached up to 45 in the year 1994 and 50 in the year 1997.

Lourdes College of Nursing had its inception in 2002 during the patronageship of late Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel Acharuparambil. The College and Hostel buildings, now located at Archbishop Attipetty Nagar, Chembumukku were inaugurated on 25th March 2004. The Educational Programmes of the College include Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (started in 2002), Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing (started in 2005), Post Basic Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (2010) and M.Sc. nursing (started in 2011) .The starting of the College of Nursing was in the premises of Lourdes hospital along with School of Nursing which was shifted in the year 2004 for the better facilities in Kakkanad at Chembumukku. The Institution provides various healthcare through outreach programmes conducted by Community health department besides the routine quality health care in Lourdes Hospital.

The College and the School of nursing are guided by Rev. Fr. S Lourdes Hospital, Rev. Sr. Suma Kuttickal, Principal, College of Nursing and Rev. Sr. Vinaya Varghese, Principal, School of Nursing who belongs to the congregation of Sisters of Charity. Presently 199 B.Sc. nursing students, 87 Post basic B.Sc. and 140 GNM students are studying in this Institution. Besides 9 students are doing their post - Graduation in Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing, Child health Nursing and Medical Surgical Nursing specialty which is great mile stone in the year 2011.

We uphold the motto Enlightened to Lighten. The college is maintaining high academic standards with State Ranks, Distinctions and First Classes in the University exams. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities are part and parcel of our training programme which shape the personality and the character of our students. During these years the students have won many prizes in the Zonal State and national SNA level competitions.

The students enjoy well established infrastructure facilities for classes, conducting exams, Library, Lab, Auditorium, Playground and Hostel. We have an excellent team of nursing educators comprising of Principal and tutors who dedicate their time for instruction, supervision, guidance and clinical teaching.
